When I see a headline like Center Helps Young Moms from The Daily-Record.com, I get excited and usually read the article. This Ohio center sounds as though it could be helpful to young moms in so many ways. This center has a “Learn While You Earn” program. Young women learn about mothering in exchange for credits to buy items that young moms need.
Items that young moms can buy with their “baby bucks” as they are called, include baby and maternity clothes, diapers, blankets and formula to name only a few of the items offered. All the items are donated items from local organizations and individuals.
Everything about this center sounded like perfection until I read this:
Pregnancy Care Center of Wayne County is a pro-life pregnancy center that offers pregnancy testing, information on abortion and alternatives, referrals for medical care and community services as well as counseling and ongoing support for clients and their extended families.
For a pro-life center to offer pregnancy testing and information on abortion, I have a fairly reliable idea of what their abortion counseling is like. Pro-life crisis pregnancy centers are abundant on the Internet, and I have seen how they represent both adoption and abortion. Neither option usually gets a fair shake from what I can tell. Most of the crisis pregnancy center information that I see paints abortion as much worse than it is, and adoption as much better. Generally parenting is not encouraged, although I have to say that this center seems to support parenting.
However, if the center is really pro-parenting, and does not just pretend to be, I can grudgingly support such a place. I tend to be pro-parenting, but, I am not in favor of trying to scare a woman into any decision – parenting, abortion or adopting. It seems such a shame to me, however, that there is virtually no one place that will present unbiased information about choices for a pregnant woman. I sincerely wish that there were such places.
