The Girls Who Went Away and Ann Fessler, its author, just won a new honor. The book has been named as one of the Top Ten Amazon Picks.
“The Book” as Dr. G. has described it was not a shocking revelation for me as it has been for some. Don’t get me wrong, I love the book for the impact that it is having. It is also a well-written and researched book of great value. The book is doing a superb job getting out the stories of women who lost their babies to adoption in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
“The Girls Who Went Away” was not a revelation for me because I know several of the women whose stories are recounted in the book. I have heard bits and pieces of their stories from them in person, so I was not surprised by the depth of their pain and the many familiar emotions woven throughout their stories.
Congratulations to Ann Fessler are in order! I know that this honor means that the book is continuing to grow in popularity. The book and what it conveys is important due to the understanding it provides of the birth mother experience during the baby scoop era for so many women. Understanding the past is one of the best ways to change the future. For too many years, we have simply ignored the significance of the past in this area.
Some like to say that “things are different now” in adoption, and they are to a certain degree. However, there are still too many young mothers or mothers-to-be that are being treated quite shabbily when they experience a crisis pregnancy. Ann’s book provides a big impetus to examine our crisis pregnancy counseling practices and consider improvements. I applaude her and her book for their role in helping spur on some much needed reforms!

I wrote her with congratulations for making the Top 10, and being the class act she is, she wrote back to thank me. She’s good!
Don’t know why that came through twice. Can you delete for me, please, Jan?
Good for you – I should do so as well. I thoroughly agree – she IS a class act!
