There are good people left in the world. I promise. Despite the stories we hear, day in and day out, there really are genuinely good-hearted people alive and well in our country. Need some proof? Okay.

Take this story out of Michigan. To paraphrase: a mother fell into some hard financial times, got pregnant. And had not one baby. Not two babies. But three babies. And not in nine month increments. All at once. Triplets. Goodness gracious!

Can you imagine with me for a moment?

You’ve just lost your job. You’ve just been evicted. And then, of all things, you get pregnant. Whether this string of events was based on poor choices or just the way the chips were falling at the time, those things happened. And then… AND THEN! Imagine your surprise when you learn that you’re not carrying one baby. Not two babies. But three babies. That causes a little bit of panic on my end as I can’t imagine birthing three babies and I’m financially stable with a place to live and a father to help change diapers. Three! THREE!

Can you sense my panic?! Eep!

Anyway, the good part of the story? People have been offering help in all sorts of ways. Places to live. Donations. In fact, the shelter in which the mother and babies are currently living has had to have staff work overtime to return all the calls offering help. That’s good stuff, people.

Especially if you’re like me and you’re sitting here thinking, “I find it amazing that this article isn’t a diatribe about how single mothers should place their babies for adoption.” Instead, people are wanting to give this mother and her children places to live. They are wanting to crowd around her and these babies and offer their support.

This story? Is what I wish we saw more of in our society. To gather around a mother and her children, without judgment and nasty comments, is encouraging. I feel happy just having read the story.

But really… I’m glad that this belly is only holding one baby. Right? There aren’t two hiding behind him… RIGHT? Oh dear.

The town where this woman lives is where I grew up (until I was 12). I still have family there.

Hastings is just that kind of town :)

I think this is fabulous. I would like to see more community support for mothers in crisis pregnancy.
