Love Thursday: Munchkin Meets the Butterball

Love is being able to let your birth daughter experience your pregnancy.

In August 2005, J, D and the Munchkin came out for a visit. Two pregnant women in August? You betcha! That visit was amaing for me for a few reasons. The main reason? A series of pictures like this one.

From day one, Munchkin was nicknamed the Munchkin. From day one with Nicholas, he was nicknamed the Butterball, knowing his due date would fall awfully close to Thanksgiving. Butterball fit him well at eight pounds, eight ounces. Though Munchkin doesn’t really fit the title anymore, being unusually tall for her age, she’ll always be the Munchkin to me.

I digress.

Sharing these moments with the Munchkin was very special. It made me feel, for just an instant, that we were a “normal” family. (Though, what is “normal?”) Had I parented, we would have had special moments like that throughout the pregnancy, so just having a few days of them was absolutely wonderful.

Looking at this picture and the expression on my face, I see nothing but sheer love and joy. Something I didn’t think I would get to experience as a birthmom and, yet, I did. Something I didn’t think that the Munchkin would get to experience and, yet, she did. Her little hand on my not-so-little belly… I can still feel the warmth of her hand against the hard, kicking, squirmy belly.

Love is memories like these.
