LookingThis was another of the pictures we had taken together during our first visit. You’ve seen the picture of me & D with the Munchkin. You’ve seen the full group picture. And so, this one also has to make an appearance. Me and the Munchkin, looking at each other. My facial expression is somewhat goofy. However, the way that she is looking at me, with eyes that mirror my own, still holds a special place in my heart.

She’s never been weird with me. She’s never cried and climbed up her Mom’s leg to get away from me. During each visit, we have moments like this one, during which we silently inspect one another or just calmly sit in one anothers’ embrace. (Granted, I’m bigger, so I do most of the embracing.)

This was my first experience with such moments other than the hospital experience. In itself, that was strange, since everyone was watching including some random photographer. Any parent knows the feeling of being looked at by your child and feeling as if they know you to the depth of their being. She was exploring my face with her eyes. Maybe she wondered, “Hmm, I think I’ve seen that eye shape in my little mirror before. Why? Oh yeah, it’s my birth mom.” Okay, at four months, she probably wasn’t deducting that much from my facial features. But still, her gaze felt powerful and all-knowing.

I love the fact that this picture was taken. I love the fact that even though the photographer was dumbfounded as to who we all were and wasn’t really imaginative in her shots, she took this picture. I love the corny pink clouds in the background. I love her little wispy curls, growing in. I love her little denim overall skirt outfit. I love the pink ruffles. I love her nose. Her hand placed on my heart. Her chin. Her cheeks. And her eyes, looking right into mine.

Her hand on your heart. So touching. I hadn’t even noticed that, I was so busy looking at her face. Such a moment captured there. Yum…
