The weather is (finally) warm! Children will soon be out of school. Free time is just waiting to be eaten up by trips, vacations and, if you’re involved in an open adoption, hopefully a visit or two. Planning a visit can sometimes be daunting. However, don’t forget to use the weather to your advantage. Get outside this summer for a visit.
1. Visit the zoo! Watching the joy on your child’s face as he/she views the animals will be a memory to last a lifetime. If neither family lives near a big city zoo, consider visiting a petting zoo or a local farm. Animals delight children whether they’re lions or pigs.
2. Go to an amusement park. And it doesn’t have to be big like Disney. Consider smaller parks or even water parks depending on age.
3. Cut it cheaper and visit your local or state fair! This involves the first two ideas: you get animals and rides. And food that is horrible for you but oh-so-good in those sticky, hot summer months.
4. Take it inside and cool off in the air conditioning of a children’s museum. This is a great idea for areas that are far too hot to be out in the middle of the day in the summer. Especially if you’re grumpy like me when it is hot.
5. Go to the ocean! I think this is self-explanatory.
6. Go fishing at a creek, river or lake. This is more probably for our land-locked readers. Kids love fishing. Get some smiles and make some memories. Don’t forget the bug spray.
7. Plan a picnic together. A real picnic at that: a blanket, a big basket and fun picnic foods. Bring a book about a picnic and lounge under a tree while your child flies a kite.
The most important thing, other than the quality time spent together, is to bring your camera! Don’t forget it! Chances are the great smiles will be a pick-me-up when winter rolls around and the weather affects your mood in a negative way.
