One of the benefits of my husband's job for me and my grandchildren is that the movie studio that he works for sometimes screens movies on the lot. We have taken the grandchildren to see several movies there, and it is a treat for us all. When my hubby found out that "Charlotte's Web" was to be shown, he was pleased as he knew 8-year old A. would probably love it.
Yesterday, five of us went to the studio for a screening of the movie. Most of you may know the story of Charlotte's Web as it is a classic in children's books. Somehow I had escaped reading it, so it was all new to me. Although I knew that farm animals were involved, I knew nothing about the story line. Had I known the main character was a cute piglet, I would have been even more interested before the movie to see it.
Although there is no overt adoption connection to the movie, Babe does address the issue of love, loss and dying which are delicate subjects in a children's movie. Until reunion, I never really thought too much about the issue of loss, now I think of it often. The explanation of loss in the movie made mention that dying is a natural sequence of the life cycle.

Thinking about the movie later, I pondered that the difficult part of adoption loss is that it is not part of the natural cycle of life. People are not meant to give their children to others to raise (in my opinion.) The natural course is to raise the children that you bear, and you circumvent nature in a way when you place your children for adoption.
Hmmm, you could view the movie as the pig being adopted and "saved"by the little girl in the movie as well. That thought just hit me too. I suppose you will take from the movie whatever it brings to your own experience.
However, I enjoyed the movie and highly recommend it. The scenery was glorious. There is a nice positive message in the movie and love and devotion. The pig and the child star of the movie, Dakota Fanning, were both equally adorable. My 8-year old granddaughter and her friend seemed to enjoy the movie as well, so it has their stamp of approval!
