Birth Mothers & Basketball Stars

I won't lie. I don't like basketball. It's the squeaking shoes. I'm sensitive to sounds and those squeaking shoes annoy me to no end. But a recent article caught me eye. Can you guess why? That's right. It mentioned adoption.

Now, in case you don't know a lick about basketball, we're in the midst of March Madness. The article I'm referring to hit prior to the Kansas (ranked number 1) and Villanova (ranked number 12) game. Unfortunately, Villanova lost. (I always root for the underdog even in sports that make me cringe.) But the article mentions a player for Villanova and shares a bit of his story.

Scottie Reynolds, the leading scorer for his team in the game, is adopted. While I'm not always comfortable with the media picking up and pointing this out, Reynolds discussed it on his own.

"Yeah, sometimes I sit back and think about where I am right now," Reynolds said quietly in an interview with The Associated Press. "Without that decision and without the parents I have right now, I wouldn't be in this position and I might not even be alive right now."

I inwardly cringe at the "might not be alive" comment, though it may very well be part of Reynolds reality. And while my first thought it to pick apart the fact that not all adoptees have the better life that many birth parents were promised, it is easy to see that Reynolds has found success in the life he was given.

And really?

Despite what we go through as birth parents, the wish most of us have for our relinquished children (or, parented for that matter) is that they find happiness wherever they happen to be. The thought "bloom where you are planted" comes to mind. This particular adoptee has done just that; taken advantage of the life he was living.

I can only hope my daughter finds peace with her placement and recognizes my support for anything she chooses to do in her life.

And Reynolds words make me all the more sad that his team lost. Even if it was basketball.
