The internet has become a useful tool for just about anyone who is doing just about anything. As I’ve learned over the years, I can turn to my computer for an answer to just about any random question. Of course, not everything you read on the internet is legitimate but it doesn’t take long to figure out how to weed the good advice from the not-so-good, bad and downright harmful advice.

So what’s available on the web for birth parents? Lots of things!

By and large, you can find forms of support in many different ways. From our own forums to these blogs to the personal blogs of others, the existence of so many birth parents at just the click of a mouse can help birth parents realize that they are not alone. If you’re like me, it’s likely you’ve only met a few birth parents in your everyday, real life experiences. As such, having so many available to you via the internet when you have a question or need an e-hug can make a world of difference in your own healing journey.

For birth parents who are considering search and reunion, the internet can be another great tool. You can easily look up the laws in your state, research your options and take action all within the course of a few hours. For states with stricter laws and a birth parent with a stronger desire, finding search angels and private investigators can be just another click away. In addition to all of that, the best thing regarding search and reunion and the internet is the available support from other birth parents who have been there and done that. Again, just a click away.

For me, I used the internet to find a therapist who had experience in adoption grief and loss (more specifically, birth parent grief and loss). Others have found local support groups that offer a safe environment in which to talk to other birth parents. I’ve also utilized blogging as a way to make other connections with those in the adoption world so as to promote the necessary reforms within the adoption system.

More so than in any other time, birth parents are being brought together by the internet. Together we are healing, learning and helping those who are yet to come. Some people may say that there’s nothing good to find on the internet. I can, however, name the names of those who have helped me come to the place where I am today. And they are good, good people.

Any other ways to track birth parents as I have my baptism records but not much else. Perhaps if I could trace the hospital? Any other ideas?
    thanks.
