An Update on the Adoption Storyline

I posted last week about my misgivings regarding my favorite show, One Tree Hill, and a new adoption storyline. I just got to watch this week's episode last night. (It's normally on Monday nights but, well, if you have children then you understand the need for Digital Video Recorders.) I had actually managed to forget (or block, perhaps) the possible adoption storyline. However, it didn't take long to surface in this week's episode.

Just a few minutes into the show, Brooke (the aforementioned potential adopting mom) got a phone call. And it hit me before I even heard a word she said. I looked at my Husband who looked back at me and we nodded. I frowned. And we turned back to the television.

Thankfully, we didn't have any birth mother involvement. Sitcoms and dramas are notorious for portraying birth mothers as either skeezy, shady individuals or women who are dumber than rocks. Neither depiction sits well with me, of course. As I said before, the social worker didn't want to recommend Brooke to adopt so she was surprised when they called with a "situation."

Here's where things should get interesting, awful and emotional later in the season.

Instead of adopting, she is fostering (though the show used the term hosting) an infant girl from another country who has been sent, without her biological parents, for surgery. Brooke will care for her prior to the surgery and afterwards, returning her when she is healed enough to return to her family. They have not yet said what the surgery is for or anything of that nature.

You can see where this might get a little, well, "ugh," right?

A friend of Brooke's mentioned that she is going to attach to the girl and it's going to be hard to "give her back." Brooke acknowledged that fact but is continuing on with the arrangement. I have many questions, of course. Is she going to pull the, "I'm rich and can therefore have whatever child I want?" Or will the show acknowledge how hard it is to part with a child you love? Will the biological family be shown respect? And so on.

Some side stories include a new boyfriend that doesn't want anything to do with her since she is bringing a child into her life and I'm sure some future drama with her own estranged mother.

At the end of the show, Brooke is at the airport waiting for the baby to arrive. My Husband pointed out the lack of realism as she was just handed a baby and the travel host juts simply disappeared. However, I think it was to illustrate how focused Brooke was on the child in her arms instead of the stuff all around her. All the same, it wasn't all that realistic.

Again, it should be interesting to watch this continue to unfold.

I hosted a child coming from El Salvador for surgery. I met them at the airport on a Friday afternoon and was handed a folder with the child's paperwork and a small backpack with the child's personal possessions. I was told basically -- "here she is, call the agency on Monday and tell them she arrived. They will set up a doctor's appointment.

MamaS; She wasn't handed paperwork, a bag and no words were exchanged. ;)

It's possible to do that?
I didn't know about that...
hmmm.
Shows never get details about things like this right.
That stupid King of Queens show comes to mind.
if I were going to do a show or write something I'd do research first.
