Adoption Comes to Sesame Street!

With so many children’s shows available these days, I do not know how many of today’s youngsters watch Sesame Street. However, the son that I raised is 32 and he used to be a huge fan when he was small. It was entertaining enough too that I could stand to watch it occasionally with my son.

I do not recall my granddaughter watching it much in my presence. Instead, she loves to torture me with reruns of her favorite show. It features these weird shaped, and extremely odd, brightly colored creatures that dance around and sing a repetitious really maddening ditty. Actually, she thinks it is hysterical and gets really giggly when I protest watching this idiotic show. She loves hearing me ridicule these odd colorful characters.

Enough of the history of kid’s shows watched in my family. I just read here that Sesame Street is tackling the subject of adoption. Say a prayer that they handle adoption better than the average television show. It wouldn't take much, right. Adoption does not seem to be represented well generally on television. I cringe at most representations of adoption on the “tube”.

Either they are saccharine sweet and portray adoption as a sheer perfection, or they portray all triad members as really messed up people. Neither is reality. I have faith in Sesame Street though, and I hope that they do me proud!

I am guessing that they will handle the topic delicately. At least I certainly hope that they do. Since open adoption is so much the norm now, I wonder if they will venture into that arena. If nothing else, I hope that they acknowledge that adoption involves loss and is not a “perfect” solution. I am fine with acknowledging the joy of adoption as long as the loss is recognized as well.

If you tune in with your kids, I would love to hear how they handle it. When I told my husband about this subject, he got really silly and asked if the adoptee would be a muppet!

this will be interesting to keep up on .... saddly i fear that they may leave out an essential member, the birth parents. I have a feeling they may just touch on the emotions the child may feel being adopted.

Sesame Street did adoption 20 years ago. Gabrielle is an adopted child. I remember that there was an episode on decorating the nursery (Big Bird brought sticks for a nest), and an episode where the adopting parents explained to Big Bird how "they wanted a baby to love and take care of" and somewhere there was a baby who needed someone to love and take care of him/her; and the final episode where the adoptive parents arrived back at Sesame Street with the new baby and all the residents gathered to see her (Big bird gave her a blanket made of feathers so she could keep warm until she grew her own!).
It will be interesting to see if much has changed.

I was too old to be watching it at the time (yes, I am that old!), but Gordon and Susan adopted Miles ages ago. I haven't seen those episodes so I don't really know how they handled them. I found out about it because the book that goes along with the scripts from the shows came up in my amazon searches for adoption books for my son.

I wonder if -- since this is a show geared towards young children, the emotions they tackle won't be real complicated ones so they probably won't address the loss issues. Just my guess, but we'll have to tune in to see.

Yeah, I'm guessing the birthparents will be left out.

We watch Sesame Street up in this house! We don't watch much television with Nick but for some reason, he really digs the show. I think it's that Elmo creature. *mumbles* :)

PS - The link to the story didn't work.

The "adopted boy" as they call him is from Guatemala so I doubt they will mention that his birth parents exist. I would so love it to be better than the usual, "we wanted a baby and got one". Being it is a show geared to kids though, they probably won't get too serious.

Well, as I'm always one to support shows that support diversity, I can't totally nay-say the show, of course. We will be sure to tune in on the 6th and 7th of November. That's a Monday and Tuesday. We'll actually have to hurry home from the library on Tuesday to catch it.

Thanks for the heads up, Jan. *thumbs up*

Oh Noah is a huge Sesame Street fan!! Other kids his age are out of that phase, but he still loves it so we Tivo some of them. I too love the diversity and we especially love "Action Jackson" about the boy in the wheelchair! We'll keep an eye out for the adoption segments.
