In October, I wrote about an expectant mother in the UK who was fighting with Social Services to keep her unborn child. Due to a past history of self-harm and an eating disorder, they were planning to take her child from her shortly after birth. As we learned in the comments, the mental health issues were a result of physical and sexual abuse and, according to her... more

There's a lot of talk about the Dutch family who relinquished their eight year old adopted daughter. I've kept quiet on the matter for a few reasons. First of all, I'm quite busy with the holidays and a newborn. Secondly, as my placed daughter's birthday falls in this month, it's quite easy for me to get strung out and overwhelmed regarding adoption speak. Third, well, I'm not an adoptive parent with experience in this area.
But that doesn't mean I don't have my own form of an opinion.
I'm... more
My mind is spinning a bit. I'm kind of angry, annoyed and sad. And angry, in case I forgot to mention it. Why? In a news story out of the UK, an expectant mother might lose her baby. Just in case she hurts it. She hasn't done anything during the pregnancy to cause them to think that she would hurt her own child. But, still, they want to take her baby away within thirty minutes of the little girl's birth.
You heard me. Thirty minutes. Thirty... more
Again, I'm glad that I'm not famous. I make parenting mistakes. Sometimes I run to the store with my hair an absolute mess. Sometimes my son has a booger hanging out of his nose. But I'm not featured on television shows and magazines. I get a few wayward looks from judgmental people on my lesser days but they're soon forgotten. I wonder if it's as easy for celebrities to forget when they're parenting skills are not only questioned but parodied and mocked.
I'll admit, I did giggle at this parody article.... more
Unless you've been living under a rock (like I was yesterday evening), you have heard that Britney Spears has lost custody of her two children to Kevin Federline (the kids' dad). She was ordered by the judge to have them handed over by noon on Wednesday but the kids have already been given to the Federline camp. After the turn over, Spears apparently went tanning and finally applied... more
We don't get a newspaper here but I recently learned of a comic strip that I can read online thanks to the wonders of today's technology. A friend clued me in because, on that day, it was a humorous look at a fire department. The very next week the subject being tackled was adoption. It figures, right?
Luann, featured on Comics.com, is a sixteen year old girl just living life. (You can read... more

Remember the article about the young pregnant woman who was murdered and how it was suggested that she and her ilk are partially responsible for much of what is wrong in America? As I read the article which I reference below, voodoo came to my mind. Only to a nice Southern girl would such a thought surface, right?
Coming from the South, my husband teases me a lot about various stereotypical aspects of Southern women. He loves my homemade biscuits and swears that my Southern roots make me naturally able to make them. There is a lot... more
My brain hurts this morning. We talk about the advances that have been made in thought and process. We talk about the continuous changes that we want to make within the adoption system so that things are done in an ethical manner that protects the rights of all involved. We don't want women who can parent their child(ren) to be unnecessarily separated. And then some moron like this comes and takes a tragic case and turns it into a platform for mothers to place their babies.
The film-critic turned... more
This quote really takes it to the heart of the matter:
"Isn't it in the best interest of a developed society -- any society that loves its children -- to support them in whatever way possible?" - Dr. Richard Boas
My heart leapt into my throat this morning as I read the article about an adoptive father whose child came to him for Korea and his new mission. They adopted their child... more
Another adoption article in the news has made me feel disheartened, discouraged and generally displeased. The article, out of the Detroit Metro, gives an update to a story that they had previously printed. In the first article, they talked about an adoptive family who was using MySpace to try and locate a birth mother/child. I was bothered but didn't write about it on this site. However, the update needs mentioning for all of the wrong included within... more
