Birth Parents Have No Right to Offer Advice

I was searching through True Mom Confessions for adoption related ones (as usual) when I came across the one below. I'm going to warn you now that I will be very opinionated on this post. I will not apologize for it but I will offer the warning to get out now.

i have a friend whos quite a bit older then i am. She's a great friend, but she's never been married and only ever had 1 child, and she gave that child up... more

Yes, People Balk

Posted by : Jenna Hatfield in Birth-First Parent Blog at 08:03 am , 503 words, 302 views
Categories: Society and Placement

I was involved in a non-adoption conversation online. The question was simple: how do you know when a person is just a friend or an acquaintance? My answer, though related to adoption, mentioned nothing of adoption. I said: If I mention my daughter and they balk, they are no friend of mine.

Another person replied with: People actually do that? I responded with: My daughter was placed for adoption, so, yes, there is some balking involved. Her reply? Nothing. Not a word.

Which is a balk in itself and therefore proved... more

Being Famous in Adoption

I didn't ever really think much about celebrities adopting until reading this article about a pair of comedians. While I do think that some celebrities (and, ahem, politicians) have skip-hopped their way around certain protocol and that others could be more educated when it comes to how they discuss adoption with the media, I'm not particularly one to call out celebrities who adopt.

And then I read this line:

She also had to take out an injunction to stop her biographer revealing the identity of Billie's birth mother. That, she says firmly, is Billie's business when she is... more

Medicaid Bumping Expectant Parents?

Categories: Legal Issues, At the Hospital

I happened upon an interesting discussion on the forums. A family waiting to adopt was told by their attorney that Medicaid was "catching on to adoptive families" and advising hospitals to "hold the baby hostage" until the adoptive family agrees to pay or "pays in full in some cases."

I must first off commend those that spoke up and told this family to "run, not walk away, from this attorney." Shady, shady. However, I'm not all that surprised at the... more

If You Need Evidence of the Lack of Progress

Posted by : Jenna Hatfield in Birth-First Parent Blog at 09:52 am , 855 words, 552 views
Categories: Society and Placement, Unplanned Pregnancy

So often when I'm arguing ethical adoption, reform and the prevailing issues behind those two things, I hear something alone these lines:

Single parenting is widely accepted today. Mothers are no longer stigmatized by society to place their babies. That's all a myth.

I argue that their belief that this is all a myth is, in fact, a myth. But they never believe me. They say things like, "Look how far we've come!" And I say, "It's not far enough." And they continue to argue that we have made so much progress. That mothers who... more

I've really enjoyed plunging myself into True Mom Confessions' (TMC) archives and finding adoption related posts by people like you and me. Quite honestly, it's been an eye-opening experience for me to look at the way different members of the triad view their own positions. In case you missed anything, here's a brief overview of the week long look at adoption confessions.

First and foremost, adoption is not a joke.... more

Week of Confessions: Birth Moms Confess

Posted by : Jenna Hatfield in Birth-First Parent Blog at 05:00 am , 979 words, 395 views
Categories: Society and Placement

Just like other Moms who have been confession on the site True Mom Confessions (TMC), birth moms have various kinds of confessions. I find myself frequently taken aback by their honesty and not always in a negative way. In fact, sometimes I wish these mothers would find the strength to say these things in public. Alas, this site is mainstream and maybe doing it in this manner is teaching the world something about birth mothers.

Quite simply put, this... more

Week of Confessions: Other Issues

The confessions on True Mom Confessions aren't always easy reads. From problems within marriages to parenting difficulties to drama with in-laws, the confessions really hit home with a lot of issues. Some of the most difficult reads for me are not just the ones talking about the ins and outs of adoption but the ones that address issues that surround adoption. Those who considered relinquishment, those who considered or had an abortion and those who experienced an unplanned pregnancy. I thought I'd share a few to wrap... more

Week of Confessions: Adoptees & Family Members

Posted by : Jenna Hatfield in Birth-First Parent Blog at 05:00 am , 1185 words, 369 views
Categories: Society and Placement

I think the most interesting confessions on True Mom Confessions (TMC) regarding adoption have come from adoptees, birth family members and those who are somehow related to or touched by an adoptee. I think they speak boldly about adoption in ways that the rest of us can't do because they had the absolute least choice in their existence and subsequent adoption than even the birth mother with the least amount of choice regarding her child's placement. I find it interesting to look at some of these and see how others' choices... more

Now it's time to jump into adoption confessions on True Mom Confessions (TMC) written by people who are touched by adoption. Today I'm going to look at ones that were written by adoptive Moms. The confessions by adoptive Moms have run the gamut on TMC. Just like birth mothers, adoptive Moms come in all shapes and sizes with different experiences, beliefs and opinions.

One of my favorite confessions was this one in which a... more
